Enchanted Sintra Tour:

The town of Sintra is a magical place to be discovered and enjoyed. This picturesque Portugese town is set amidst the pine-covered hills of the Serra de Sintra, amongst luxurious vegetation, cliffs and water springs. The nobility and elite of Portugal constructed their exquisite palaces, extravagant residences and decorative gardens here. It was nominated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1995.

Sintra is Europe’s greatest example of the whimsical and colourful Romanticism style of architecture. This elaborate design style was inspired by the love of art and the mysticism of ancient cultures to create decorative and flamboyant buildings. The town centre is incredibly charming, with pretty cobbled streets that are lined with traditional houses, shops and cafes, all centred around the Gothic styled National Palace.

Upon arrival in Sintra, the tour will start with a visit to the Sintra National Palace. The Palace is at the heart of Sintra and was the preferred residence of the Portuguese nobility between the 15th and 19th centuries. Huge twin chimneys, which extend from the Palace kitchens, are its most distinctive exterior feature and dominate the landscape of this historical centre. The interior offers a great opportunity to discover more about the history of Portugal with the various staterooms reflecting the different tastes of the many kings that lived here.

After the Palace visit, we will have a quick stop at Café Paris to taste the delicious “Travesseiro”, the sweet specialty of Sintra, together with a “bica” (Portuguese expresso coffee).

There will then be some leisure time in the historical centre to allow participants to enjoy the traditional shops and local flavours.

After leaving Sintra, we will drive to Cabo da Roca (the Roca Cape), the westernmost point in continental Europe to enjoy a fabulous photo opportunity at the Roca Cape cliffs.

The journey back to Lisbon will be made along the coastal road, driving past Guincho, Cascais and Estoril.
